Un medic, renumit romancier, A. J. Cronin

Medicul si romancierul scoțian A.J. Cronin s-a născut la 19 iulie 1896, in Cardross, Dunbartonshire. Numele său complet este Archibald Joseph Cronin. Tatăl sau a murit când avea 7 ani, mama a fost prima femeie inspector sanitar din Scoția.

A absolvit Facultatea de Medicină la Universitatea din Glasgow in 1919, si-a intrerupt studiile si a fost chirurg in Marina Regală in timpul primului război mondial. In 1925 devenea doctor in medicină. A fost inspector sanitar si a studiat bolile profesionale din minerit.

S-a căsătorit in 1921 cu o doctoriță, Mary Agnes Gibson si au avut 3 copii.

In 1926 începea să practice medicina la Londra dar a renunțat din cauza unor probleme de sănătate si s-a dedicat scrisului. A debutat cu romanul Hatter's Castle (1931), primit cu entuziasm de public si devenit rapid best seller in Marea Britanie. A continuat cu romanul Three Loves (1932), nuvela Kaleidoscope in "K" (1932), romanul Grand Canary (1933), nuvelele Country Doctor (1936), The Stars Look Down (1935). In 1937 publica romanul The Citadel, o oglinda a serviciilor medicale britanice ale vremii, cea mai bine vânduta carte scrisa de el.

A scris povestiri si eseuri in publicații britanice si străine, scenariul Jupiter Laughs (1940), The Keys of the Kingdom (1941), Adventures of a Black Bag (1943), The Spanish Gardener (1948), The Northern Light (1958), The Judas Tree (1961), A Pocketful of Rye (1969),Desmonde (1975), Lady with Carnations (1976), Doctor Finlay of Tannochbrae (1978), etc.

Prima adaptare pentru marele ecran a scrierilor sale a fost Once to Every Woman, in 1934, film realizat după nuvela Kaleidoscope in "K", publicată in 1932. In 1934 apărea filmul Grand Canare după romanul omonim, regizat de Irving Cummings, apoi The Citadel in 1938, in regia lui King Vidor.

Dupa succesul avut la Hollywood, A.J. Cronin s-a mutat împreuna cu familia in Statele Unite, in 1939. A revenit in Anglia in 1945. Intre timp s-au realizat filmele Vigil in the Night (1940), The Stars Look Down (1940), Shining Victory (1941), Hatter's Castle (1942), The Keys of the Kingdom (1944).

In 1950 a publicat cartea autobiografică Adventures in Two Worlds.

A călătorit in Irlanda, din nou a stat o perioada in S.U.A., apoi in Canada, Franța. Ultimul sau domiciliu a fost in Montreux, Elveția.

A murit pe 6 ianuarie 1981, în Montreux, Elveția.

Archibald Joseph Cronin (19 July 1896 – 6 January 1981), known professionally as A. J. Cronin, was a Scottish physician and novelist. His best-known novel The Citadel (1937) tells of a Scottish doctor in a Welsh mining village, who then shoots up the medical ladder in London. Cronin knew both venues, as a medical inspector of mines and as a doctor in Harley Street. The book describes some controversial medical ethics that helped to inspire the National Health Service. Another popular mining novel of his, set in the North East of England, is The Stars Look Down. Both have been filmed, as have Hatter's Castle, The Keys of the Kingdom and The Green Years. His 1935 novella Country Doctor inspired a long-running BBC radio and TV series, Dr. Finlay's Casebook (1962–1971), set in the 1920s. There was a follow-up series in 1993–1996.
