Creatinchinaza (CK)

Creatinchinaza (CK), also known as creatine phosphokinase (CPK), is an enzyme found primarily in the heart, skeletal muscles, and brain. It plays a crucial role in energy production within cells.

What does a CK test measure?

A CK test measures the level of CK in your blood. Elevated CK levels can indicate damage to the heart, skeletal muscles, or brain.

When is a CK test ordered?

A CK test may be ordered by a doctor for a variety of reasons, including:

 * To diagnose a heart attack: CK levels typically rise within a few hours of a heart attack and peak around 24 hours later.

 * To monitor the progression of muscular diseases: Such as muscular dystrophy or polymyositis.

 * To assess the effectiveness of treatment for certain conditions: Such as statin-induced myopathy.

What do the results mean?

Normal CK levels vary depending on factors such as age, sex, and muscle mass. A high CK level can indicate muscle damage, but it can also be caused by other factors, such as strenuous exercise or certain medications. Only a doctor can interpret your CK test results in the context of your medical history and other symptoms.
